CBD, or cannabidiol, is a cannabinoid. What is a cannabinoid? A cannabinoid is a chemical molecule that triggers physiological reactions within the endocannabinoid system of the body. The endocannabinoid system is responsible for your body’s immune system, pain perception, and is involved in nearly every process of the body. Having an efficient endocannabinoid system is vital to retaining health and preventing disease. Many of us do not have enough cannabinoids to fuel our endocannabinoid system. Without cannabinoids, inflammation increases and escalates throughout the body. CBD can replenish a system that doesn’t have enough cannabinoids, this way your endocannabinoid system can calm inflammation and regulate activity throughout the brain and body. A healthy ECS maintains homeostasis in the physiological processes of the body!
CBD activates the CB receptors throughout the body. The CB receptors are found in the adrenal glands, adipose tissue, the heart, liver, lungs, prostate, uterus, ovary testis, thymus, tonsils, the brain, the bones, the GI system, and in the immune cells of the central nervous system. In fact, human beings have more CB receptors than any other class of receptors! These receptors determine pain sensation, inflammation, allergic responses, sleep cycles, and much more! CBD modulates and regulates physiological reactions to bring homeostasis and balance to the mind and the body.
The Endocannabinoid System
The Endocannabinoid System creates balance and homeostasis in the body by activating immune cells, regulating immune responses, and providing anti-inflammatory agents throughout the entire body. The ECS is fueled by endocannabinoids, these are cannabinoids produced by the body that activate the CB1 and CB2 receptors. The two best-known endocannabinoids are Anandamide (AEA) and 2-Arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG). The name “anandamide” comes from the Sanskrit word for “bliss” and it acts in pain, depression, appetite, memory, and fertility. In modern life, there’s pollution, inflammatory food, too many chronic diseases, too little sleep, too much worry, too many phone/social media/etc alerts, and everything has to be done ASAP. This puts a lot of strain on the endocannabinoid supply and can create an endocannabinoid deficiency. Many of us are walking around with too much stress and too little cannabinoids.
CBD is a phytocannabinoid (a cannabinoid produced by the hemp plant) that can re-supply a deficient system and activate the CB receptors. Cannabinoid signaling across synapses is critical for human health. Within the GI tract, the endocannabinoid system modulates motility, secretion, sensation, emesis, satiety, inflammation, and more. The central nervous system is regulated by cannabinoids. The HPA axis, a fundamental part of the body’s stress response, is the main hormone regulatory system of the body and it is partially controlled by the endocannabinoid system. This system is a part of neurodevelopment and neurogenesis throughout life. The endocannabinoid system is the basic immune system and regulator of the body, yet it was only discovered in the 90s!
