The Skin’s Endocannabinoid System

In recent years, researchers have discovered just how important cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system are to maintaining healthy skin and preventing disease. Much as ingesting CBD orally (as with tinctures/capsules) builds up cannabinoids in the systems of the body, applying CBD topically builds up cannabinoids in the skin and underlying muscles and tissues. Cannabinoids help the body fight inflammation and bacteria before blemishes arise while simultaneously reducing both redness and scarring. Finally, by retaining the health of the skin at a cellular level, we can ensure that we age with beauty. You see, the skin has an abundance of cannabinoid receptors which are responsible for the proliferation, differentiation, and survival of skin cells. The CB receptors are responsible for the immune system of the skin. When the endocannabinoid system of the skin is not functioning well, this can lead to disorders of the skin, including acne, dry skin, inflammation, eczema, allergic dermatitis, psoriasis, skin cancer, and more.

CBD and Skin Health

The hemp plant is a pharmacy in a plant – it has over 500 chemicals! The 500+ compounds that have been discovered so far include 110 cannabinoids, over 200 terpenes, flavonoids, fatty acids, vitamins, plant sterol, chlorophyll, gamma linoleic acid, and more! This means that this plant has many ways in which it ensures healthy cells; it is able to target many different aspects of cellular healing at once.

Other Herbs

Mother nature has given us many herbs that have been traditionally used throughout cultures as remedies to create beautiful and healthy skin, healing and protecting our largest and most detoxifying organ – the skin!

Rosehip

Phenols in rosehip oil have antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties; this will help protect against and heal skin conditions, such as eczema, or allergic reactions. Additionally, it is packed with Vitamin C which protects against sun damage, reduces wrinkles, and brightens the complexion. Rosehip oil additionally helps macrophages shift into a form which promotes healing rather than forming poor healing and creating scars. This oil contains retinoids such as retinoic acid which helps fight acne and creates brightenness by speeding up cell maturation and turnover. Finally, containing linoleic acid, it really moisturizes the skin.
